Belle Garden, Tobago, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, 28th December, 2008. Bovell Cancer Diabetes Foundation (BCDF) was officially launched at the Belle Garden Community Centre.
Approximately 200 persons participated in the Launch, which was chaired by Dr. Eastlyn McKenzie former Independent Senator of the Trinidad and Tobago Senate. The feature address was delivered by the Honorable Member of Parliament for Tobago East Mr. Rennie Dumas.
Secretaries for Agriculture and Education, Tobago House of Assembly, Mr. Hilton Sandy and Mrs. Claudia Groome-Duke, respectively, were among those who addressed the attendees. Other speakers included: Mr. Carlton Phillips, President, Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Collis Hazel, President, Roxborough Police Youth Club, Mrs. Beache, President, Belle Garden Village Council and other well wishers.
Other activities at the Launch included: blood glucose and cholesterol testing (Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago); blood pressure testing (BCDF), foot care examinations (BCDF) and cancer and diabetes education sessions, including circulation of brochures (BCDF).
Awards in recognition and appreciation for long-standing dedicated community service were presented to the “magnificent seven” women of Belle Garden. Awardees included: Malvina ‘Sister’ Bishop, Hilda Boucher, Mildred Bovell, Matilda Byron, Iona ‘Alia’ Gray (posthumously), Elvira Job (posthumously) and Catherine Nurse (posthumously).
Popular calypsonians Johnnie King, Dagger and Tobago Rio entertained the attendees with carefully crafted, relevant, informative, jumpy tunes, which brought most attendees to their feet. BCDF will like to acknowledge all those who participated and supported the Launch.
