Utility of BMI and Abdominal Obesity Indices

Globally, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in childhood is increasing. In the Caribbean, at least one in every five children carries unhealthy weight, and risks developing chronic diseases like diabetes in adulthood. In Trinidad and Tobago one in four, one in three, and 25% of school-aged children have been reported to be overweight or obese. This study examined the prevalence of overweight and obesity among 6 to 13 year-old Tobagonian school children utilizing body mass index (BMI) and other abdominal obesity indices, and described the relationships among them.

Optimizing Community Diabetes Prevention
